Dry Oil 101: What is it and how to use it
Oil vs dry oil? Is there a difference? Do I need to use oil on my skin? So many questions and BeautyProphet is here to help! Natural oils are amazing for your skin’s health and are quickly gaining more momentum as a “moisturizer of choice” for the body over traditional body lotions and creams. Why is that? Oils are naturally hydrating and contain a wealth of vitamins and antioxidants that feed skin on a deeper level – skin absorbs the oil deep into its many layers, whereas a body lotion or cream formulation maintains skin’s surface hydration on the upper layers. So now let’s get to answering all the questions on oils and what a dry oil is exactly…
What is an oil?
Extracted from plants and nuts, oils are full of natural vitamins, minerals and fatty acids because they are products of mother earth- they are known for their ability to hydrate skin and protect the skin barrier.
What is a dry oil?
You may think to yourself- “well how can a liquid be dry?” The term “dry” refers to how the oil acts once applied to your skin. A dry oil is a quick-absorbing oil to moisturize the skin, without leaving any slip or greasy residue on top. Skin will instantly feel silky and smooth. And, although a dry oil is considered light-weight, there is actually a scale of light to heavy weight in terms of how the ingredients are nourishing and moisturizing your skin. For example, natural Sesame Oil or Sunflower Seed Oil are on the lighter side and best for everyday hydration, while Argan Oil, Coconut Oil or Monoï are considered to be a heavier-weight oil to deeply rehydrate irritated or overly dry skin.
A typical oil or massage oil is different, because they will stay on the skin’s surface for a longer period of time, and not absorb as quickly.
Who can use a dry oil?
Everyone! Especially dry or sensitive skin benefits. Natural dry oils are extremely nurturing and help increase skin elasticity to prevent premature skin aging.
How can you use a dry oil?
1. Body: To nurture your skin from top to bottom, its best to apply on clean, dry skin, directly after a shower or bath
2. Hair: Dry oils are the perfect frizz-tamers, split-end resolvers and shine-boosters for hair because they are light and won’t weigh the hair down or make it look oily. Simply smooth onto clean, dry hair from roots to ends
3. Nails: Dry oils are great to strengthen and condition nails and cuticles. Simply apply all around the nails to soften and hydrate.
